President's Letter September 2022

It was great to see many of you at our Homebrew Festival and at our first Movie night where I enjoyed handing out glow sticks. We have several OTC events coming up, including Sing II movie night Presented by Hay House on Sept 9th, Candidates Forum on Oct 5th, and Oktoberfest presented by Debbie & Lauren McCauley on Oct 2nd. These events can only happen with the time and talents by our great membership, Thank You! The generous financial and in-kind support of our local businesses allows us to put more of the event income towards the maintenance of the historic buildings and grounds, Thank You too!  Please see the specific write-ups below for these events for pictures, details, and acknowledgements of all the individuals and benefits.

The City is currently updating our Mobility Element, a section of our general plan that governs our transportation planning.  The OTC weighed in with our thoughts on the latest draft iteration presented in a July workshop, with 3 key recommendations:

  1. Efficiently convey out-of-town vehicle commuter traffic from inland communities to the northeast of the City to I-5 south via prime arterials to avoid clogging residential streets with through commuter traffic
  2. Changes to accommodate the rural context, which is distinct from the suburban one
  3. Promote the Olivenhain trail network as not just a recreational amenity, but as the primary active mobility conduit in the community

Our full letter with additional details can be found here.  Speaking of the trail network, the City recently completed the opening of the Trail 95 along El Camino del Norte. Karen Billing has a nice write up.

Finally, the San Dieguito Planning Group recently sent a nice letter to the County Board of Supervisors supporting “the RSF Association, Olivenhain Town Council, and Encinitas Residents for Responsible Development effort to lobby the County Board of Supervisors to conduct a multi-jurisdictional study assessing fire evacuation safety during a major wildfire event.”

I will miss the next movie night, as I will be in Long Island, NY that day for a memorial service, but I will look forward to seeing many of you at Oktoberfest.

Yours in Community, Dan
